August 25, 2011
During the past week, two unrelated events occurred regarding safety at Greenwood Elementary School.
The first event happened during back-to-school registration on August 18, 2011 (at approximately 4:30 pm). Parents reported to me, after the mother left school grounds, that a suspicious situation had taken place. The mother witnessed her daughter being called by name, by a woman that she could not identify. The mother indicated the unknown woman motioned her daughter to come to her. When the mother noticed the encounter, she reported that the woman left the area. The mother and daughter were both inside the cafeteria (close to the hallway) and the woman was in the hallway outside of the cafeteria. The child told her mother she did not recognize the woman either.
The woman has been described as being white with brown hair that is below the ears and flips-up. She was wearing a brown t-shirt with a collar. The mother did not see the woman’s face.
When the father of the student telephoned me, he informed me that he made a police report. I immediately involved our district security personnel, who then reported to the school site. The security officer got the description from me, along with the child’s picture, to begin researching from video tapes at the district office. After being in contact with the father and the district security officer, during the weekend, arrangements were made for the parents to review the tapes with the officer at the district office. I also spent several hours reviewing the videos as well. Despite the effort of everyone involved, we were not able to identify the person who had spoken to the student. Unfortunately, we don’t know if this person was a stranger, volunteer, parent or staff member. If you have any information regarding this issue, please report it to the main office and the Greenwood Village Police Department.
The second event happened this morning when personnel at the school received information that a former employee may have demonstrated behavior of concern that resulted in us contacting law enforcement authorities. The issue was followed up by the Cherry Creek Schools and Greenwood Village Police Department. It was determined there was no threat to children, staff, or the school community.
Our community can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of our children. As we enter into a year with many community activities, please be vigilant in supervising your children and accompanying them during their activities, at all times.
If you ever feel concerned about a situation, please report it to the main office (720-554-3400) and the Greenwood Village Police Department (303-773-2525) immediately. I will be diligent in keeping this situation and all safety issues a top priority. Please partner with the school staff to continue in making Greenwood a safe place to learn and grow.
Thank you for your commitment to excellence in all areas.
